Monster Rancher Episode 7: The Courageous Seven

This episode's name is a shout out to the Magnificent Seven Samurai, and has a similar theme. With our cast of heroes assembled... it's time to meet our villains.

There's a slow pan of an ominous floating castle.

We hear a voice: "What news have you for me, Gali?"

And inside, we see Master Moo and his top minions, collectively known as the Big Bad Four. The one named Gali speaks. "Rest assured, steps to gain total control of the land are progressing smoothly, Master Moo."

He's not happy with them. "Progressing smoothly? You are failing!"

"We are doing our best."

"Silence!"

"You will listen to me. I want to have the entire world under my command... and I want it done yesterday! Understood?"

His minions nod. "Yes, Master."

The only female of the group, Pixie, turns to leave... but the others stop her. "Pixie," rasps the snake-like beast named Naga. "What about those Searchers?"

"What Searchers?" "The human boy and his friends who are searching for the Phoenix!"

Naga adds that they were last spotted just outside Pixie's control area, and Gray Wolf (...) says that while he doesn't see them as a major threat, it would be in their best interest to deter the group.

Pixie smirks. "Thanks for the advice, but I have everything under control!" She unfolds her wings and flies off, the camera showing a beautiful split-second shot of her face.

Meanwhile, Genki is happily rollerblading down a hill.

Golem and Mocchi aren't far behind him, and soon he notices they've caught up!  This pushes him to go even faster.

The rest of the Searchers are less than enthused by their exuberance, but Genki tells that at the rate they're going it'll be a hundred years before they find the Phoenix.

However, he soon grinds to a halt! (Mocchi crashes into him from the sudden stop.)

"And now that we have you attention," Suezo says, "we seems to be at a crossroads. Any ideas?"

Holly decides to check the Magic Stone, but it's not working at the moment.

After floundering for a while, Genki decides they'll all go to the right. Tiger stares. "And why?"

"I know these things!" Everyone sighs.

"Let's go west," Tiger growls, while Hare wants to go north. Holly asks them why, and Hare says it's because a Hare's sense of direction is better than a Tiger's. Genki pipes up that right is the way!

Holly has a solution, though: Pick up Suezo and give him a good spin!

Suezo spins around and around and eventually points north. Hare's quick to point out that north was his idea, and the group follows along, with Suezo telling Holly that next time they could flip a coin.

Genki and Tiger are still miffed, though. "So Hare's leading the pack, is he?"

That makes Genki desperate to prove he's the leader, and he races ahead with Mocchi on his back... until they come to a hill.  Genki slides down backwards, crashes through a fence, and barely saves himself from hitting the ground.

"Leadership is tough," Holly sighs.

Genki and Mocchi land in a field of flowers near a village. Suezo says Genki should learn to slow down and Tiger points out that being first isn't everything.

But Hare admires the beauty of the place! Everyone's quick to agree on that, and the camera pans up above the village to a dam...

And a gang of Evil Hares! "There they are! The Searchers Pixie wants us to take care of!"

Their Captain grins. "And what could be more convenient for us than to have them lolly about under a cliff like this one!"

The Evil Hares head off as the camera shows up the dam holding back a lake...

Meanwhile, Golem is enjoying the flowers, and Holly is happy to compliment him. "Not everyone appreciates flowers as much as you do, Golem!"

Genki and his friends play in the flowers, but they stop short when an alarm rings out from the village. Someone suspicious is at the dam!

Genki asks the villagers what's going on, but Suezo steps up to take a look.

"I see two Monsters at the dam! And they're tryin' to break it down!" The villagers panic. "They'll destroy our village!"

The Evil Hares punch away at the dam, wearing away its structure.

Before Genki can say anything, Tiger sprints towards the dam. "Tiger, wait!"

But Tiger's Lightning attack makes short work of the two Evil Hares.

"This looks a lot like Moo's work to me," he growls, making them shake from fear.

Before he can continue with the interrogation, Captain Evil Hare leaps down! The other Searchers have caught up by this point.

"Aw, what a disappointment! We were gonna use all this water to wash you guys down the drain, but I guess we'll have to think of something else!"

"All right, men! Get them!" The Evil Hares charge...

But Tiger, Suezo, Mocchi, and Hare are easily able to defeat them!

Realizing he's out of his league, the Captain backflips to the dam and punches it himself... and runs as everyone charges him.

Tiger's lightning sends them all scattering.

The villagers thank the Searchers for saving their town. A little girl is especially thankful! "My daddy says you saved our village for us!"

Genki tries to shrug it off. "Well, we just happened to show up! And it was us they were after in the first place, so..." Hare wonders why he's taking all the credit, but everyone laughs soon after...

And then they hear a crack.

The dam's leaking!

Genki runs to plug it with his cloak, but it doesn't work for long!

Tiger and Suezo begin to panic, while Hare calculates the dam will hold for...another 5 minutes!?

Seconds later, more leaks appear! Mocchi and Golem try to help Genki plug them, but it's apparent this won't help for long. "It just keeps coming and coming!"

The villagers manage to gather enough wood to nail the dam shut, buying them time. "The dam has to hold," the mayor cries. "Everything depends on it!"

"Daddy, what about the flowers," cries the little girl.

"The water holds a mighty force," Tiger scolds. "You should be prepared for the worst."

Punctuating his words, another leak springs up!

Holly is desperate to help the town, and Hare says he could think of something--but Suezo says they don't have time! After a moment, Hare stands up. "If we can't prevent the dam from breaking, then we'll have to do something about the water!"

Soon, everyone is gathered around Hare and a map he's drawn.

"This is the plan. Cut the trees from this forest and build a new dam between the rocks under the cliff!"

Holly and Suezo worry that there isn't enough time, but Hare's convinced his plan will work. "We're Monsters, remember? We've got Golem's strength, Tiger's speed..."

But Tiger's doubtful. "This just sounds like another one of his tricks... and I'm not falling for it."

Holly begs him to reconsider, and another shudder from the dam makes him agree. Tiger, Suezo, and Golem head off to get materials, while Hare orders Holly to help the villagers find high ground.

Hare decides to pitch in too, but he's cut off when Genki asks him what he and Mocchi are supposed to do.

"Nothing! You're not qualified!"

Genki and Mocchi think this isn't fair, but they soon get a job plugging more leaks!

Meanwhile, Golem uproots several trees for lumber, Tiger uses his speed and claws to shear their branches, and Suezo chews vines to make rope!

Hare digs a moat for the new dam's placement, and Holly watches them work along with the other villagers, who have all made it to high ground.

And Genki and Mocchi are still holding back the old dam. "Hurry! Please!"

Luckily, the others have arrived with the lumber, and Golem begins to place the new wood and pound huge nails in place.

By this point, Mocchi and Genki can barely hold the dam back. "It's too hard!" "Hang in there, Mocchi!"

And just as the new dam is complete... the old dam bursts.

Genki escapes the wall of water by jumping! He's one athletic kid!

And the water continues on, pressing against the new dam and diverting to its side, like a river.

"It's working," Holly cries.

Everyone cheers, and Hare congratulates himself and his plan...

And then they hear a creak.

The new dam begins to burst as well!

The Searchers run for it. "Run run run run! Get up above! It's not safe here," Hare screams.

But Holly notices one person isn't moving. "Genki.. What's he doing?"

Are you guys ready for the awesome?

Genki is trying to hold back the falling dam. By himself.

"That's not too smart," Tiger says. "What in the world is he thinking," Hare cries.

"I'm not giving up," Genki yells, continuing to strain against the weight of the wall of water.

"Gen! Ki! What! Are! You! Doing!" yells Suezo.

"I'm not giving in!"

"The baddies made this happen!"

"I won't give up! Moo is not gonna win!"

Holly says that some battles can't be won, but the little girl starts to run forward to aid him.

Tiger stops her, though. "Go back! I will take care of Genki."

But instead of pulling him back... Tiger leans against the dam with him.

This inspires Suezo, Mocchi, Golem, and Hare to charge, and soon they're all pressed against the dam.

"It's about time," Genki says. "Okay, heave!"

...But it looks like it won't hold, despite their efforts.

"It's not enough," Holly murmurs.

"We can help!" says the girl.

"...You're right! We can!"

"Let's get down there!"

Every villager charges.

"Need a hand? We're here to help!"

"Guess I needed your help after all," Tiger admits, and the girl smiles at him before pushing against the dam.

Soon, everyone helps.

Everyone pushes.

And when everyone works together...

The water stops.

They stemmed the tide--and all because one person refused to let it happen. One person stood up and refused to budge.

That one person was Genki. "We did it," he cheers, leaping up into the air.

Everyone celebrates!

Life in the village goes on as normal, and they reinforce the new dam with more wood.

The little girl gives Genki some flowers, and even pets Tiger. :3

Soon, the Searchers head off...

And run into another crossroads. "Which way?"

Hare thinks west would be the best direction, but Tiger says to let Genki decide... and Hare agrees. "Sir Genki, we await your decision!"

Genki's stunned by their trust in him.

After floundering for a while, he decides. "Left!"

"Left it is!"

And so the Searchers head left, under the direction of their brave leader, Genki.
